WASHED OUT: dude, your epic downbeat groove hooked me on this “chillwave” thing
BEACH HOUSE: quoth victoria legrand, “get out your flip flops and razor blades, kids” on the sunday line-up, charming gothic jokesters as ever throughout the excellent set. i had to tell off some jerky teenagers like a schoolmarm, but a vampire one with scary teeth and eyes of death.
MAJOR LAZER: seemed to be missing switch, but diplo et al kept it classy and trashy despite the watered down bass-woofer setup. stage spectacles of dancing chinese lions + ballerinas in grass skirts = LIKE, grosteques of excessively ironic dry humping demos = internalized self-hating misogyny/feelings of racialized exoticism = FAIL.
NEON INDIAN: performed a wonderful pre-fest set @ bottom lounge thursday, and seemed to replicate that success sunday
SLEIGH BELLS: did not slay me so much as stab me in the heart a little, even forgiving sound system issues. sigh, is it just me? “tell ‘em” was promising before the mic disaster, and “crown on the ground” (embed) did do justice as a finale
PAVEMENT: is too old of a legendary band for me by half, with wide-eyed kid apologies.
